Our Farms

Rwanda

Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is a small country with a land area of approximately 26,000 square kilometers, most of which lies between elevations of 1000m to 4500m above sea level. It is a country characterized by undulating hills, ranging from steep slopes in the west to plains and marshlands in the east. Despite its proximity to the equator at southern latitudes, Rwanda experiences average monthly temperatures of around 20°C, resembling a refreshing highland climate akin to spring or autumn. This climate provides an ideal environment for the cultivation of high-quality macadamia, which thrives in subtropical climates originating from Australia. Rwanda Nuts Company operates eight estates across the eastern, western, and southern regions of the country, totaling 170 hectares of land and cultivating approximately 33,000 macadamia trees, excluding the relatively colder northern part of the country.

Cultivation

Our cultivation process begins with the establishment of nurseries. It takes two years from germination to planting for our seedlings. The grafting process, which requires complex techniques and equipment, is challenging for small and medium-sized farmers to undertake. Therefore, we not only provide seedlings to our own farms but also distribute them to farmers, fostering long-term relationships as contract growers. Additionally, the farms we distribute to serve as model cases for farmers in their respective regions. We have been and will continue to nurture macadamia as a local industry alongside them.

Purchasing and Technical Guidance

In addition to our own farms, we also purchase from contract farmers, processing approximately half of Rwanda’s total yield. Our purchasing process involves direct visits by our staff to farmers nationwide, regardless of the quantity or remote location. We verify and record yield and quality with our own eyes and provide cultivation guidance as needed to ensure quality. Our staff comprises graduates from agricultural high schools and universities, trained not only in macadamia cultivation but also in other crops such as potatoes, beans, tomatoes, and carrots for household consumption. During the slack season of macadamia harvesting, we provide cultivation guidance to ensure that farmers can adequately provide food for their families.

Processing and Export

We operate a factory in the eastern part of the capital city, Kigali, where we receive, dry, wash, process, package, and export macadamia nuts from across the country. In our processing facility, skilled employees perform manual grading, allowing for flexible and detailed sorting that machines cannot achieve.

Towards a Circular Macadamia Industry

In our circular macadamia industry, we utilize a sustainable approach where the husks are composted on the farms and used as organic fertilizer. The shells are burned as fuel for the warm air fans used to dry the nuts, and then returned to the farms to be mixed with compost, contributing to soil activation and mulching, thus achieving zero waste.
